I Like Canada
An Archival Recordings Field Trip to Toronto in 2018

I've only visited Canada once, back in 2018, but it was during an important period in my photographic journey. Earlier that year, I had participated in the NYT Portfolio Review and I was in the process of rethinking my approach to documenting cities.
The solemn, sparse, architectural compositions that I had become known for were evolving into fully populated scenes that portrayed the urban environment in a fuller, more complete way. I had started down this path just two months prior to a scheduled trip to Toronto from a conference and it turned out to be an excellent place to build on some of these new concepts I was experimenting with.

I decided to share this work now because we are in a really strange geopolitical moment, where a relationship that was rock solid is under enormous stress for really stupid reasons. My trip to Toronto was fun, people were nice, and it was really interesting to visit a city that was both surprisingly familiar and very foreign at the same time. Definitely top on my list of places to visit again.
